A safe route for kids to get to school.
Each day, children living in Potrero Terrace hop onto their very own walking “school bus” to get to Starr King Elementary, a mandarin-immersion school or Daniel Webster Elementary, a spanish-immersion school. Guided by one or more adults, children in this program exercise and learn about their surroundings by walking to school with their peers. This program is part of the larger Rebuild Potrero project by BRIDGE Housing Corporation and HOPE SF.

The Potrero Pedestrian Safety project improves the safety of four key intersections that children cross daily. The route design also offers places for children to rest, meet a friend, smell a flower, or explore an art installation on the way to school. The project design was inspired by working sessions with Starr King and Daniel Webster students.
Key project features include painted corner sidewalk extensions with large planters to improve pedestrian safety, a painted walking school bus route on the sidewalk, and additional seating at some bus stops.
