A collaborative all-inclusive multi-use Sunset community space

Playland is closing to the public on June 30, 2022. See "Updates" tab for details.

Playland at 43rd Avenue is an inclusive space for families, youth, and seniors, with opportunities for gardening, exercising, gathering with neighbors every day or at special events, and it includes a wide variety of play opportunities. It opened after a year of community design, three-months of construction, and over 2,000 volunteer hours. The result is an innovative, vibrant community space that uses durable materials and design interventions meant to be temporary and easily reversible, should the project need design changes or should the property get redeveloped.

Francis Scott Key Annex school site in the Outer Sunset neighborhood included an empty asphalt lot of approximately 1.5 acres. Since deemed seismically unsound, the school building had been used for offices and storage, and the large paved play yard was used occasionally as a parking lot or for recreation. This sporadic use and a perimeter fence in disrepair made the site look unsafe and neglected—a potential safety issue in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Although the school site may be redeveloped for teacher housing in coming years, it has been enjoyed by many residents as a tremendous community asset during this interim phase.
