Playland Is Closing!

Playland is closing to the public on June 30, 2022
Over the past 6 years, Playland has been well-loved and provided many community members with wonderful memories. Playland was created as a transitional use on a site slated for teacher housing. After 6 years of active use, Playland will be closing on June 30, 2022. The planned 135-unit affordable housing development, named Shirley Chisholm Village (“SCV”), is expected to start construction in August 2022.
In partnership with SFUSD and the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development, MidPen Housing is developing SCV. The project will provide affordable housing to low- and moderate-income households and will prioritize SFUSD educators and district employees. SCV is expected to start construction in August 2022 and complete construction in Summer 2024. For more information on SCV, visit MidPen’s website.

To celebrate 6 years of successful programs at Playland, the Planning Department hosted a special event on Saturday, May 7th from 11am – 1pm at Playland. To commemorate Playland’s history, we will be having a call for entries for a Time Capsule. You can still contribute to the Time Capsule, that will be installed when the SCV project is completed in 2024. Here are the details to participate:

We are looking for a souvenir, an object, a special something that you have and would like to save for future generations of residents. Something that can become an archeological find of the wonderful place that has been Playland. Your special treasure will be included in the Playland Time Capsule, installed at the new Shirley Chisholm Village. Objects could be: photographs, letters, postcards, small objects like buttons, a small object that fits in your hand, a flash drive with digital documents. If your object is bigger than your hand, take a picture and mail it. What not to bring: No food, liquids, plants, or living things that can decompose. No large items.

Mail to: María De Alva 49 S Van Ness Ave, Suite 1400 San Francisco, CA, 94103 Submission Details: • Object entry with title (if applicable), owner’s name and city of residence. • Special message (optional) • Email address or contact information

Later entries deadline: August 30, 2022
