Active Urbanism Seminar, Fall 2015

In the Fall of 2015, Antje Steinmuller (CCA) initiated a collaboration with Robin Abad (SF Pavement to Parks) on a graduate research seminar. The ‘Active Urbanism’ seminar investigated the sharing economy and its ramifications on the production of public open space. During the first half of the semester, students identified and researched local ‘sharing economies’ of food, textile manufacturing, media production, housing, transportation, and public-private open spaces. The second half of the semester focused on the Dogpatch in San Francisco, a neighborhood with a high proportion of architecture and design professionals, vast postindustrial landscapes, and numerous grassroots open-space initiatives being implemented in the face of rapid influx of new residents and workers to the area. The seminar resulted in several speculative proposals for open spaces in Dogpatch, all incorporating some aspect of a local ‘sharing economies.
